ACL Rehab Physiotherapy in Surrey

Maybe your knee gave way mid-game, or you have a surgery date and a stack of conflicting advice. Either way, you want to know what happens next. ACL rehab physiotherapy in Surrey at Kinect Physiotherapy and Wellness starts with an assessment of your knee and ends with a plan you can follow.

Physiotherapy can support ACL rehabilitation before surgery, after surgery, or if you and your doctor choose rehab without surgery. You can reach us from Newton, Cloverdale, Delta, and across Surrey.

What ACL Rehab Involves

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the main ligaments that steady your knee. It keeps your shin bone from sliding forward and helps control twisting. Most tears happen when a planted foot meets a sudden pivot or an awkward landing, often with no contact from another player.

ACL rehab follows the same logic whether or not you have surgery. First you settle swelling and get the knee moving, with a full bend and a fully straight leg. Next you rebuild strength in the thigh, hip, and calf, checked against your other leg. Then come single-leg balance, controlled squats, hopping and landing, and agility work.

The aim is a knee you can trust on stairs, on the court, and on uneven ground.

Who Can Benefit From ACL Rehab?

ACL rehab may suit you if you play pivoting sports such as soccer, basketball, or volleyball. It may also suit you if you hurt your knee on a slippery step or a hike. You might be waiting for surgery. Or you may have had ACL reconstruction and your surgeon has cleared you to begin rehab.

Some people choose to rehab an ACL tear without surgery. Others hurt the knee in a car accident or at work and need a plan that fits an ICBC or WCB claim.

If your knee has not been assessed yet, start with your doctor. Physiotherapy works alongside your surgeon or doctor and does not replace them.

Signs You May Need ACL Rehab

You may notice some of these after a knee injury or surgery:

  • Swelling that built up within hours of a twist or a fall
  • A pop at the moment of injury, followed by a knee that feels loose
  • The knee giving way on stairs or when you change direction
  • Trouble straightening the knee fully
  • A thigh that feels weak or has lost size
  • Worry about trusting the knee again

These signs can have other causes, so an assessment helps sort out what is going on. See a doctor promptly if your knee locks, you cannot put weight on it, or your foot turns numb or pale. After surgery, get medical advice quickly for fever, spreading redness, or calf pain and swelling.

How Physiotherapy Helps ACL Recovery

Many people find that a clear plan eases the worry as much as the exercises ease the knee. Each part of treatment has a job:

  • Exercise therapy rebuilds the thigh, hip, and calf muscles that protect the joint.
  • Manual therapy may help with stiffness and tight muscles around the knee.
  • Dry needling can be used for stubborn muscle tightness that slows your exercises.
  • Electrotherapy may help settle pain or swelling early on.
  • Controlled movement training builds balance and alignment, so the knee tracks well when you land.

Confidence is part of rehab too. Each stage gives you proof that the knee can handle more, and that is often what makes sport feel safe again. Your physiotherapist explains each step so you know why you are doing it.

What to Expect From Your ACL Rehab

Your first visit

A 45 minute assessment covers your injury, any surgery, and your goals. We measure swelling, how far the knee bends and straightens, strength, balance, and how you walk. Bring any MRI or surgery reports.

Building strength and control

Follow-ups run 30 minutes. Early work settles swelling and restores a fully straight knee. Single-leg balance, controlled squats, and hip, thigh, and calf strength follow. You leave with home exercises you understand. Visit numbers vary.

Returning to running and sport

Hopping, landing, agility, and graded running come last. Before you return to sport, we compare strength between legs and check movement quality and confidence, alongside your surgeon's advice.

ACL Rehab FAQs

Not always. Some people choose rehab without surgery, and others need reconstruction. The choice depends on your knee, your sport, and your doctor's advice, and physiotherapy supports either route.
Many people do. Regaining motion and strength before surgery may make early recovery smoother. Check timing with your surgeon, then book an assessment.
It varies from person to person. Many people work on it for months rather than weeks, and your plan follows how your knee responds.
That depends on testing and your surgeon's advice. We look at leg strength, hopping and landing quality, and how confident you feel.
You can expect effort and some muscle soreness as exercises progress. Sharp pain or swelling that builds after a session is a signal to tell us so we can adjust.
Yes. Home exercises are a normal part of ACL rehab, and we show you each one and how to progress it.
That worry is common, and building confidence is part of rehab. Graded exercise lets you test the knee in small steps. Counselling is also available at our clinic if the worry feels heavy.
